Lamor’s customer in Oman benefits from soil treatment, restoration, and preservation efforts

Oman soil remediation

Lamor Middle East has entered into a contract for soil remediation projects in Oman, and the projects have already commenced with the necessary preparations. The focus is on remediation efforts to clean up land that was contaminated with oil several years ago. Soil, an essential natural resource, provides vital nutrients to plants and supports a diverse array of organisms, including humans who rely on it as a habitat.

Challenge

An environmental issue arose within the company due to a spill, requiring the treatment of contaminated soil in accordance with the company's standards and following the regulations set by the Environment Authority. The company subsequently issued a tender for the contaminated soil, with the objective being to clean, segregate, and remediate the soil.

The primary challenge was to provide high-quality soil treatment while simultaneously ensuring a high level of customer satisfaction. To overcome this challenge, Lamor's global specialists collaborated and leveraged their expertise to deliver the required highest standards.

Another challenge was the hot weather. During the summer, Lamor experts encountered high temperatures, humidity, and dust, and there were occasional difficulties in sourcing water for the treatment process.

Solution

The solution that Lamor is implementing has a substantial feeding capacity and effectively reduces the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) content from the contaminated soil to meet the remediation target criteria set for the project while adhering to EA standards. Lamor’s treatment approach emphasizes the use of organic materials for treating this contaminated soil, and it involves the utilization of mechanical machines such as tractors, among others. Lamor also maintains regular monitoring of the projects to ensure compliance with customer's requirements.

Lamor conducts site visits to assess the requirements for the contaminated soil. This includes the collection of soil samples for laboratory analysis, enabling comprehensive understanding of the project needs. During this process, the types and levels of contaminants present are identified, the site's characteristics such as soil composition and hydrology are evaluated and potential risks to human health and the environment are assessed. Subsequently, a risk assessment in collaboration with the customer is conducted and any necessary permits obtained.

These projects show a significant commitment to protect and restore the natural environment, benefiting both present and future generations. Additionally, the treated soil can be utilized for backfilling purposes, further maximizing its usefulness.

Lamor treated and restored the contaminated soil in accordance with the standards set by the Environment Authority. Lamor's goal is for every organization to prioritize environmental protection and prevent any spills that could harm our planet. By collaborating and working together, we can ensure the growth of natural grass, the safety of wildlife and animals, and the preservation of natural groundwater,” says Amur Khamis Al Rubaiai, General Manager at Lamor Middle East.

Impact

The aim of the treatment is to restore the contaminated soil to its natural state by addressing the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) and segregating all waste from the soil. This process helps improve water and soil quality, safeguards ecosystems, and preserves biodiversity. By tackling pollution sources and preventing further contamination, the remediation process contributes to the long-term health and sustainability of the environment.

Contaminated soil has a humanitarian impact above all else, as our lives depend entirely on the Earth. If we fail to protect the environment now, future generations will inherit a planet where a significant portion is contaminated with hydrocarbons.

The project also aligns with global conservation goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15 – Life on land. Human life depends on the earth as much as the ocean. Lamor removes hazardous substances and waste from contaminated drylands, reducing the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity. With our solutions we aim at contributing to global food and water security, climate change mitigation and adaptation.
