Lamor and Litoclean consortium makes steady progress on Rijeka Refinery seabed remediation in Croatia

Lamor, in partnership with Spanish remediation specialist Litoclean, is making steady progress on the ongoing seabed and groundwater remediation project at the Rijeka Refinery, operated by INA – Industrija nafte d.d. (INA).
As part of INA’s comprehensive marine protection programme for the Urinj Peninsula, the project addresses historical subsurface contamination within complex karst geology. Field operations are advancing in line with the priorities agreed with INA, and the consortium has now drilled more than 50 boreholes along the coastal perimeter. With Phase 1 complete and Phase 2 nearing its conclusion, Phase 3 is already underway in parallel, with equipment delivery, civil works and installations well advanced. The first units are expected to begin operating in the coming months.
Engineering an induced hydraulic barrier
The core of this environmental solution is an innovative hydraulic barrier system operating by induced depression. By strategically drilling along the shoreline of the Urinj Peninsula, the multi-well network creates an artificial hydrogeological low point in the subsurface. This controls groundwater flow dynamics, intercepts oily contaminants originating from historical industrial operations and prevents fluid migration toward the Kvarner seabed and adjacent Adriatic waters.
A project of this complexity demands both technical rigour and the flexibility to adapt to local conditions. Our teams have consistently refined the approach as new data emerged from the subsurface. Our close collaboration with INA and Litoclean demonstrates the impact of applying proven environmental engineering to complex marine challenges. We remain fully committed to our partnership with INA and take great pride in contributing to the protection of Croatia’s waters through a lasting defence against subsurface contamination. — Anish Jaggi, Director, Lamor Croatia.
