Celebrating the World’s Biggest Environmental Remediation project in Kuwait – 6.5 million tonnes successfully cleaned

KAK Lamor Closing Ceremony Jan 2026 1

KAK-Lamor joined Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) and international partners in Kuwait on 21 January 2026 to celebrate a major milestone in the Kuwait Soil Remediation Project, part of the UN-backed Kuwait Environmental Remediation Program (KERP).

The celebration marked the successful remediation of approximately 6.5 million tonnes of oil-contaminated soil, addressing the environmental legacy of the world’s largest man-made oil spill. The project has become a global reference for large-scale environmental remediation, recognised internationally for its advanced engineering solutions and long-term environmental benefits.

The event brought together Excellencies and senior representatives from the United Nations, the Ambassador of Finland to Kuwait, H.E. Juha Mustonen, EU representatives including Member of Parliament Ville Skinnari, as well as delegates from the Saudi Arabian and Qatari embassies, senior Kuwaiti government officials, and KOC leadership. Their presence showed the broad international support and shared commitment behind one of the world’s most significant environmental recovery efforts.

Speakers highlighted the role of international cooperation, innovation and perseverance in restoring Kuwait’s environment. The project was recognised as a global benchmark for large-scale remediation.

The celebration served as both a recognition of achievements to date and a reaffirmation of the shared ambition to deliver lasting environmental impact for Kuwait and the wider region.

The project now enters a new phase

With the project now entering a new phase, KAK-Lamor remains committed to working closely with Kuwait Oil Company and international stakeholders to safely complete the remaining scope, further reinforcing the project’s role as a benchmark for environmental responsibility and sustainable recovery. As per the most recent contract, work will continue until July 2027, at the latest.
