Building readiness together: Lamor and WWF Finland train volunteers for Oil Spill Response

WWF XAMK and Lamor 2025 1

This year, Lamor has again partnered with WWF Finland to provide a unique opportunity for WWF volunteers to strengthen their expertise in oil spill response. The training event was held at XAMK’s oil spill response test basin in Kotka on October 3.

Lamor, WWF Finland and XAMK South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences collaboration comes at an important time. In the Gulf of Finland, Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet” now operates with older and less seaworthy vessels, increasing the risk of oil accidents in the region. In the event of an accident, WWF’s volunteers play a key role in cleaning up polluted shorelines and helping affected wildlife. WWF Finland now has around 10,000 volunteers who are a vital reserve, as an oil accident typically requires thousands of people than can be deployed on site at once.

Last Friday, we held our second event of the year, where WWF Finland volunteers joined us for a hands-on training day at XAMK University of Applied Sciences’ oil spill response test basin.

During the day, the volunteers rotated through three pit stops:

  • Learning about different types of oil
  • Practicing shoreline oil collection through a simulated exercise at the basin
  • Exploring Lamor’s equipment and understanding how it is applied in real-life spill situations

Collaborations like this strengthen local preparedness for oil spills and ensure volunteers gain hands-on experience with professional equipment. They also allow organizations like Lamor and WWF to share knowledge, raise awareness and make a real impact on environmental protection.
